Have You Heard of “Spot It!”?

If you haven’t, I’m so excited to introduce you to it! It’s a super fun and (educational) game that can promote language development for kids and even helps adults learn new languages! 🤩

The Goal of the Game

"Spot It!" is a fast-paced and engaging card game where players must quickly identify the one common symbol between two cards.

Each card features a series of unique symbols, but there is always—and only—one matching symbol between any two cards.

It might sound tricky to explain, but it’s actually incredibly simple! This game is perfect for all ages, sharpening reflexes and observation skills in a fun and dynamic way.

Different Ways to Play

There are several ways to play "Spot It!", but the simplest version goes like this:

  • Each player gets a set of cards, while the remaining cards form a draw pile in the center of the table.

  • The first card from the central pile is flipped over, and players must check if one of their cards has a symbol that matches one on the center card.

  • If they find a match, they say the name of the symbol (for example: turtle, hand, ice cream, etc.) and place their card on top of the center card.

  • The game continues as players look for new matches with the updated center card.

The goal? Get rid of all your cards first!

Multilingual Fun

I promise you, it’s even more fun when playing with people who speak different languages! In my last game, we decided you could name the symbol in any language—or just whatever language came to mind first! 😅

"Spot It!" reminds me of Picture Naming, a method used in linguistic research to study lexical access, language production, and other linguistic skills.

I’m sure you’ll find it just as entertaining as I do!

Benefits of Playing as a Family

Here are some of the great benefits of playing "Spot It!" together with friends and family members:

👉 Enhanced observational skills: It helps kids pay attention to details and improves their ability to observe.

👉 Strengthened language skills: While describing symbols and discussing cards, children expand their vocabulary in all the family’s spoken languages.

👉 Encouraged social interaction: Playing together fosters communication and teamwork, essential for social and linguistic development.

👉 Improved reflexes: Spotting matching symbols quickly develops reflexes and coordination.

👉 Fun and learning combined: The engaging nature of the game makes learning a natural and enjoyable process.

What’s the Right Age to Play?

"Spot It!" is suitable for children aged 6 and up, but younger kids can enjoy it too with a little help from an adult. I think it’s a fantastic choice for family game nights!

There are various editions available online, so I recommend checking out the official website to find the one that suits you best.
